Dental Crowns FAQ
What is a dental crown?
A dental crown is a tooth-colored, ceramic, custom-made restoration that covers a damaged tooth to prevent it from breaking down further.
Why do I need a dental crown?
A crown is needed for teeth that have significant fracture, wear, and damage where a dental filling would not work. Crowns cover the entirety of a tooth to provide additional strength, function, and may even improve the appearance of a tooth. This will help improve a smile, improve eating function and confidence with your teeth.
How long does the dental crown process take?
Crown appointments are done within two appointments. The first appointment is for the tooth preparation. During this appointment, your doctor will prepare your tooth by removing damaged parts of the tooth and create space for the ceramic crown. This typically will take 1 to 1.5 hours. You will have a temporary crown placed on your tooth.
After two weeks, you will return for your second appointment to replace your temporary crown with a custom-made permanent crown. This appointment takes less than 30 minutes.
Does getting a dental crown hurt?
No. Local anesthesia is used to numb the area making the procedure generally painless.
What material are crowns made of?
Our dental crowns are made of porcelain or ceramic. This matches the natural color of your teeth and looks realistic so that it will fit harmoniously with your adjacent teeth.
How long do crowns last?
The average lifespan of dental crowns ranges between 5 to 10 years, although, with great care of your teeth, crowns can last much longer.
How do I care for my crown?
Brush and floss your teeth normally paying special attention to the gumline. Avoid eating extremely hard, sticky, or chewy foods (like ice or hard candy) that can crack or dislodge the restoration
